Second aid convoy enters Egyptian side of Rafah crossing en route to Gaza

In recent news from Cairo on October 22nd, a second aid convoy made its way into the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing, destined for the Gaza Strip. This information comes from sources within the Egyptian security and humanitarian sectors at Rafah. The convoy, consisting of approximately 19 trucks loaded with vital medical and food supplies, underwent inspection by UNRWA, the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency.

This initiative follows the entry of the first convoy, comprising 20 trucks carrying essential supplies, into Gaza on the previous Saturday. The urgency of these deliveries stems from the severe situation in Gaza, exacerbated by Israel’s imposition of a complete blockade and airstrikes in response to a fatal attack by Hamas on Israeli territory on October 7th. The Rafah crossing had been non-operational since shortly after the incident, with bombardments causing damage to infrastructure on the Gaza side, including roads and buildings.

U.N. officials have emphasized the critical need for a higher, sustained pace of aid delivery, suggesting a minimum requirement of at least 100 trucks per day to address the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza. Prior to the recent conflict, the enclave had been receiving several hundred trucks daily. In response to these challenges, U.N. humanitarian chief Martin Griffiths disclosed ongoing efforts to establish a “light” inspection system. This system aims to allow Israel to verify the shipments while ensuring a continuous and unimpeded flow of aid.
