The political landscape in Pakistan is ablaze with controversy following the return of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who arrived from his self-imposed exile in London ahead of the 2024 Pakistani general election. Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has sharply criticized the ‘VVIP protocol’ extended to Sharif, labeling it as unjust and unlawful.

PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan condemned the government’s facilitation of a ‘convicted absconder,’ emphasizing that all federal and Punjab government resources were allegedly utilized to orchestrate Sharif’s return. He expressed concern over the eroding integrity of Pakistan’s legal system, attributing the decay to Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

The PTI accused Sharif of receiving undue privileges, including a VVIP protocol and the opening of a stateroom at Islamabad Airport to welcome him. In stark contrast, the party claimed that Prime Minister Imran Khan was picked up from court while attending to his biometric attendance, underscoring the alleged disparity in treatment.

Additionally, PTI leader Elahi criticized the Punjab government’s directive to deputy commissioners, urging government employees, specifically ‘patwaris,’ to attend Sharif’s homecoming event. The PTI asserted that the people of Lahore overwhelmingly rejected the PML-N and its leader’s return, emphasizing their dissatisfaction through social media campaigns and video posts.

In response to Sharif’s speech, former PTI spokesman Shahbaz Gill commented on the PML-N leader’s purported lack of humility. Meanwhile, a PTI spokesperson deplored the erosion of decency, modesty, law, and justice in the state’s efforts to facilitate Sharif’s homecoming, citing an undisclosed ‘London Plan.’

Under the leadership of Imran Khan, the PTI maintained its stance against forces allegedly manipulating the nation through conspiracy and coercion. The Pakistani political arena remains tense, with allegations of misuse of power and resources echoing in the aftermath of Sharif’s return.
