Hollywood Labor Unions Rally Behind SAG-AFTRA Amidst Suspended Talks, Demand Fair Negotiations

Hollywood’s major labor unions are voicing collective support for SAG-AFTRA following the breakdown of the guild’s recent negotiations with studios. In a joint statement issued on Friday, organizations including Writers Guild of America West (WGAW), Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), Directors Guild of America (DGA), and others urged the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to resume talks promptly.

The statement emphasized the unity among industry professionals, calling for a fair contract addressing actors’ unique concerns. The unions insisted that the studios must go beyond replicating deals made with other unions and make substantial efforts to meet the specific needs of performers during negotiations with SAG-AFTRA.

This development comes after the AMPTP declared the suspension of talks with SAG-AFTRA, citing an insurmountable gap between the parties. SAG-AFTRA responded swiftly, accusing the studios of employing bully tactics and likening the strategy to past unsuccessful attempts with the Writers Guild of America.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, expressed disappointment over the halt in negotiations. He revealed that the decision to cancel the scheduled session came unexpectedly, leaving the guild puzzled about the studios’ approach to resolving the issues. The unions and guilds are now demanding that the AMPTP engage in meaningful negotiations, ensuring a fair deal for performers.
